How to Get SMTP Details: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Last Updated on August 21, 2026

Step 1: Decide Which Email You Want Your Store to Send From

Before grabbing SMTP details, pick the email address you want customers to see in their inbox for example [email protected] or your personal Gmail/Outlook address if you don’t have a custom domain email yet.

Step 2: Get Your SMTP Details

Pick whichever matches your email provider:

1. If You Use Gmail

  1. Go to your Google Account → Security.
  2. Turn on 2-Step Verification (required to generate an app password).
  3. Go to Security → App Passwords.
  4. Create a new app password, selecting “Mail” as the app type.
  5. Enter these values into wCart:
    • Host: smtp.gmail.com
    • Port: 587
    • Username: your Gmail address
    • Password: the app password you just generated
    • Encryption: TLS

2. If You Use Outlook / Microsoft 365

  1. Sign in to your Outlook account.
  2. If you have MFA enabled, generate an app password from Security settings.
  3. Enter these values into wCart:
    • Host: smtp.office365.com
    • Port: 587
    • Username: your Outlook email address
    • Password: your account password or app password
    • Encryption: STARTTLS

3. If You Use a Custom Domain Email (e.g., through GoDaddy, cPanel, Zoho, Bluehost)

Most store owners use a custom domain email like [email protected]. To find your SMTP details:

  1. Log in to your hosting provider or email admin panel.
  2. Look for Email Accounts or Manage Email.
  3. Click your email address, then find “Connect Devices” or “Configure Mail Client”.
  4. Your host, port, and encryption details will be listed there — copy them exactly.
  5. Your username is your full email address, and the password is your mailbox password.

4 .If You Use a Transactional Email Service (Recommended for Larger Stores)

If you’re sending a high volume of order emails, a service like SendGrid, Mailgun, or Brevo is more reliable than a personal inbox.

  1. Sign up with the provider and verify your sending domain.
  2. Go to their SMTP settings page.
  3. Generate SMTP credentials.
  4. Example for SendGrid:
    • Host: smtp.sendgrid.net
    • Port: 587
    • Username: apikey
    • Password: your generated API key

Step 3: Enter the Details in wCart

Once verified, click Save & Continue.

Go back to your wCart onboarding screen.

On the SMTP step, fill in:

  • Host
  • Port
  • Username
  • Password
  • Encryption type

Once your SMTP details are saved successfully, your wCart store will be able to send order confirmations, shipping notifications, and other customer emails directly from your own email address.
